World Equity Markets: A New Approach for Segmentation (in English)

This paper is an assessment of international equity-market integration and uses an innovative approach to segment equity markets into related geographic areas. The authors´ focus is on the relationships among the returns of the dominant national equity indexes by continent. To understand how these indexes have evolved, the authors will concentrate on a reduced number of dimensions extracted from principal components analysis. Cyclic behavior of a two-span RC beam built with plain reinforcing bars

Reinforced concrete structural elements lacking appropriate seismic detailing and built with plain reinforcing bars, and subjected to cyclic loads like the ones induced by earthquakes, are particularly sensitive to the bond-slip mechanism. Though, existing studies on the cyclic behavior of RC structures generally refer to elements with deformed bars. As a result, the behavior of elements with plain bars is not yet fully understood. In this framework, the cyclic behavior of a two-span RC beam built with plain reinforcing bars, collected from an ancient building structure, was investigated. The support and loading conditions observed in-situ were simulated in the test setup. The beam displayed a flexural failure and the damage was concentrated in three short plastic hinges. Estimation of Gender wage Discrimination in the Portuguese labour market

Gender wage discrimination is a reality in the Portuguese labour markets although no study has been until now carried on to measure its dimension. We think that economists should contribute to the knowledge of the dimension and significance of this phenomenon by giving orientation for the definition of political measures towards its reduction. In this paper we measure the size of gender wage discrimination in the Portuguese labour market. Furthermore, we evaluate this measure for the five Portuguese main regions. In recent literature about the measurement of gender wage discrimination the Oaxaca decomposition and its developments is a commonly used approach. We extend this approach using bootstrap techniques for statistical inference purposes.

ACOMPANHAMENTO DE DESENVOLVIMENTO PROFISSIONAL: INOVANDO A GESTÃO DE PESSOAS NA UNIVERSIDADE PÚBLICA.

Tem se observado uma preocupação crescente por parte das organizações, em se implantar mecanismos eficazes de avaliação do desempenho humano no trabalho. Além de oferecer um importante feedback, essas sistemáticas geralmente estão vinculadas a algum tipo de planejamento de desenvolvimento profissional, ou planos de carreira. Inúmeros são os modelos de metodologias de avaliação do desempenho humano no trabalho, porém, escolher aquele que mais se assemelha com a cultura organizacional tem se tornado um grande dilema, pois importar modelos aplicados em outras organizações quase sempre tem se mostrado ineficaz. A Universidade Estadual Paulista – UNESP, experimentou diversas sistemáticas de avaliação do desempenho de seu pessoal técnico administrativo até o ano de 1992, modelos esses conhecidos como tradicionais, como por exemplo, o da escala gráfica. Entretanto, após sete anos de pesquisas, discussões e debates junto a sua comunidade de servidores técnicos e administrativos, em julho de 1999 a universidade implantou em todas as suas unidades universitárias, que representavam na época quinze campi universitários, uma nova sistemática denominado Acompanhamento de Desenvolvimento Profissional – ADP. Este sistema, que acompanha as novas tendências em avaliação do desempenho humano no trabalho, voltadas a resultados, em muito se assemelha a Avaliação Participativa Por Objetivos – APPO. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar este sistema e tecer algumas considerações a respeito de sua implementação dentro da universidade pesquisada, já que o autor participou efetivamente de seu projeto de implantação. A presente pesquisa pode ser classificada como do tipo qualitativa exploratória. Para a coleta dos conteúdos utilizou-se de fontes secundárias, combinada com a técnica de observação-participante, pois o autor - profissional da área de recursos humanos da universidade pesquisada – além de ter participado efetivamente da implantação do sistema; como servidor técnico administrativo da UNESP também é avaliado pelo mesmo

Ensino e aprendizagem da estatística : realidades e desafios

A influência da Estatística na vida das pessoas e nas instituições tem-se tornado cada mais visível, o que implica que todos os cidadãos devam ter conhecimentos de Estatística para se poderem integra na sociedade actual. Ora, esta relevância da Estatística na sociedade tem-se repercutido no incremento do seu ensino nas escolas, o qual não mais deixou de se desenvolver e aprofundar desde a sua introdução no ensino secundário na década de sessenta, do século passado. Tendo por base literatura publicada, sobretudo em Portugal, nesta conferência são abordados quatro aspectos do ensino e da aprendizagem da Estatística: o tratamento do tema nos programas de Matemática do ensino básico e secundário; a aprendizagem da Estatística; o seu ensino; e, finalmente, alguns desafios para futuras investigações. O estudo destas dimensões da Educação Estatística a partir de alguns estudos realizados em Portugal assume-se como uma contextualização a ter em conta e que melhor reflectirá a nossa realidade, permitindo, ao mesmo tempo, a partir de estudos realizados noutros países, estabelecer desafios para o futuro

Ecological payback in national energy matrix: analysis of wind energy expansion

Sustainable development concern has become subject of recurrent discussions over the last years due to the duet large greenhouse gases emissions and world growth, especially in developing countries. Electrical sector is one of the major segments responsible for greenhouse gases emissions, but also the one in which modern society depends the most for life standard maintenance, economic and social activities. A renewable source considered in Brazilian energy sector expansion is wind power, which has a 143 GW potential. As such, the paper aims to estimate environmental impacts (CO2 emission) involved in wind power plants construction phase and return time for compensating these emissions during operation. Ecological payback is developed through CO2 emission analysis of different energy sectors required as inputs in construction and final emission reduction due to this “clean” power plant operation in national electrical matrix. Estimation of economic and environmental impacts is based on input-output methodology, using a 2004 matrix for Brazilian economy. Results point out for a maximum payback period of 4 months in worst case scenario, and major pollution contribution of Steel and Products Manufacturing during construction.Input-Output; Environmental Sustainability; Energy Economics; Wind Energy

Tão perto de casa, tão longe de nós: etnografia das novas margens no centro da urbe

Philippe Bourgois é, desde 2007, “Richard Perry University professor” no Departamento de Antropologia e de Medicina Familiar e de Práticas Comunitárias na Universidade da Pensilvânia. Esteve durante largos anos ligado ao Departamento de Antropologia, História e Medicina Social da Universidade da Califórnia, São Francisco. A publicação, em 1995, de In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio projectaria o seu nome muito para além dos Estados Unidos: uma etnografia no coração porto­‑riquenho do Harlem, em torno dos actores e dos ambientes da venda de crack. Seguir­‑se­‑ia um longo trabalho de terreno em acampamentos de dependentes de heroína em São Francisco, orientando o seu trabalho para as formas mais radicais da pobreza e da marginalidade nos EUA. É deste trabalho de terreno que sai o seu último livro, Righteous Dopefiend. Em Junho de 2007 esteve em Lisboa para participar na 3.ª edição do “Ethnografeast”. Foi então que aproveitámos a oportunidade para ouvir um percurso invulgar contado pelo próprio: uma longa conversa no Hotel Zurique, cujo nome só vem ao caso por evocar o país onde passou uma parte da infância

Skill Development Patterns and their Impact on Re-employability: Evidence for Portugal

Abstract: With employment and labour crisis training for (re)employability reaches the highest importance and absorbs an increasing share among public active labour market policies. Provided that retraining is adequate shorter unemployment spells can be observed in the transition between jobs. Therefore duration models seem to be quite adequate to model the time intervals between previous and subsequent occupations and the kind of skills /training acquired in between deserves most attention among the main covariates.
